Vegan 4 Babe - That movie got me thinking...

Leesa - Lives in Melbourne/Australia - Journo/Comm Grad/vegan

Just blogging my vegan life in and around Melbourne.

My shopping trip to Maxi in Blackburn is always so much fun!  They have a great range of organic/vegan products.  They have Tofutti ice-cream too, but I am trying to not eat too much sugar at the moment, so sadly didn’t buy any today :(

Went to Trippy Taco for the first time yesterday.  OMG the vegan original burrito was seriously awesome.  The entire menu is vegan/vegetarian.  Will be going back soon!

Just having some fun at the Abbortsford Convent with friends.  This was at WVD - we went to lentil as anything and then went and got some amazing ‘Fritz Gelato’.  I had bounty and coconut and my friend had lemon and blood orange.  All the flavours were amazing but the coconut was the BEST!

We wandered around for ages and bought heaps of baked goods - sorry don’t have any photos :(  Was a really fun day filled with vegan goodies!

Lunch at “A Caterpillar’s Dream”, in Kew.  This place is close to home and all the food is vegetarian and mostly vegan or vegan available.

I had the sweet and sour pork wrap, and my sister had the Avocado toast (I can’t remember the exact name).  It was delicious!  The wrap was amazing.  I am really coming around to the idea of fake meat; although I am still a bit conflicted about it.  Regardless the sweet and sour pork wrap was tangy and tasty, with just the right amount of vegetables.

I went back the next day and got a coffee with my mum and we decided to try out some of the vegan cakes.  We had the banana cupcake and the chocolate cupcake.  Both were good.  The chocolate one was a bit rich for me so I enjoyed the banana more.

I was browsing the menu and am going back to try some of the bent boxes.  There are four different varieties: Fish, chicken, sweet and sour pork and Thai spicy duck.  Think I might try the fish next time for something a bit different.

A Caterpillars Dream is a little vegan oasis in the heart of Kew and I definitely recommend it to people looking for some vegan love in the suburbs.

Another night at ‘Vegi Mum’, in Doncaster.  This is fast becoming my favourite place to eat!  My friend and I had the Salt and Pepper Calamari and it was FANTASTIC!!!!  So yummy.  We also had special friend rice (sans the egg).

The best dinner ever at ‘Yong Green Food’, on Brunswick street.  It is such a cute little cafe.  You can see and smell the chefs cooking the amazing food.  Most of the menu if vegan or vegan alternative; it is ALL vegetarian.  A lot of the menu is also raw. They have quite a few mock meat dishes and so we decided to try some out.  I am not usually a fan of mock meat, but what we had was so damn good!!   I gave up eating mean for animal welfare and environmental issues, so not sure what the morality is in eating fake meat, because i actually detest the sight and taste/texture of meat.  However, I thought I would give it a bit more of a go and I did like it.

My friend and I had:

  •  Sushi wraps as a stater
  • Tuna with steamed vegetables: My friend had this as a main.  The tuna was unbelievable.  How do they make it vegan and so realistic?!?
  • Chicken stirfry:  It was a little hot, but a really yummy dish.  It was served on brown rice with a side of salad.
  • Green Tea ice cream (my friend had this and I think it was soy, but not 100% sure)
  • Raw carrot cake: Ok this cake was AMAZING!!!   It was raw and delicious and tasted like velvet.
Organic orange and Kiwi fruit.  Was so delicious :)

Vegan carrot and walnut cake from The Radical Grocery Store in Brunswick.  This cake was really good and super moist.  It was a huge piece too, so I split it and it was still more than enough.

Lunch today at ‘Yong Green Food’, on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy.  This place is amazing.  The food is mostly vegan and raw.  The interior is really eclectic and has a homely feel to it.  The service was great and there were so many amazing options on the menu.

I had the Chickpea wrap with beetroot and cashew cream and my friend had the fish (which I think was made out of bean curd, although not sure) on brown rice with steamed vegetables.

Will definitely return here as I have to try some of the raw deserts.

Vegan super orbs.  These are so good!!!  They are a mixture of nuts, seeds and dark chocolate.
